How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?

my son has a diaper rash it seems like over 2 weeks. We change him almost every hour and thru the night. we changed diaper brands. i used balmex and desitin and vitamin a+d.

now i am just trying to prevent moisture all together by using powder and letting him go without a diaper for like 20 minutes at a time.

He also has baby eczema(on his scalp) that we control with eucerin, could that make him more sensitive to diaper rash? How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
Okay, well first I went thru similar sort of thing with my oldest son... Turns out he had a YEAST rash on his bum. I didnt even know boys could get this, but it happens. It is impervious to all the diaper rash creams, desitin, A/D, whatever. A yeast rash tends to be red and uniformly even rather than spotty. It can be peeling too and have faded patches in it. Anyway, immediately get some vaginal yeast or mens cream from the store, there is no preferance for ingredient, it's all safe (they're not eating it) and apply a think coat of it every time you change his diaper, after wiping him. within a few changes you should notice it starting to get paler and paler. The thing with yeast is that even a small amount of esp. 2 left on them can restart it again. I had to go to using warm wet washclothes after the wipes, b/c NO baby-wipes gets them completely clean. you wipe with like 10 wipes, you think it looks clean, then you use a warm rag.... Hmm, a little bit left - wow! So try this, try to let him air dry for a few mins after bath or diaper change if you can. Yeast doesn't like to be dry or light.

FYI after i had this experience I wondered why yeast diaper rash is NEVER mentioned in the baby books/articles... I have also seen several babies since then with resistant diaper rash that was really yeast rash. The doc can also give a Rx for Nystatin cream, and yes its the same thing they prescribe for thrush which is also a yeast infection. How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
Take him just to be safe.. Its not gonna hurt thats why they a re there.. they might give u a prescription too and make him feel better.. Good luck! How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
There is a medical condition, I can't think of it, I see if advertised a lot at the doctor's office that involves babies and stubborn diaper rash. Make an appointment with his doctor and have him evaluated. There is a prescription cream for this problem. How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
Diaper rash usually goes away within 2 to 3 days with home care. If it persists, or if sores start to appear on your baby's skin, talk to your child's doctor. How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
Try to get hold of some Metanium ointment - it has titanium dioxide in and it's the only thing that cleared my son's severe nappy rash after he'd had diarrhoea. It was great and dealt with the pain as well. Nothing else worked.

I hope your baby is better soon. How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
There is some stuff called Boudreaux Butt Paste that works really great. I have seen it clear diaper rash on lots of babies that the other brands would not even attempt to clear up. I am not sure about the eczema. But I would try to get him in at the DR office before the hospital. The Boudreaux (not sure if spelled right but close to it) can usually be found at wal mart either in baby section or pharmacy. I hope this helps. How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
Talk to your pediatrician before the ER.

My daughter had eczema on her face and chest, I thought it was bad baby acne. Our pediatricain recognized it as eczema caused by an allergic reaction, she said that dairy was the most likely culpret. I breastfeed, so I stopped eating all dairy....within 4 days the eczema was completely gone. If you're breastfeeding try this, if you're giving formula, try soy based formula. Within a week you'll see a difference if he has the same problem my daughter had. IF not, a change in diet won't hurt anything. An allergic reaction may be the cause of the diaper rash as well. Some pediatricians don't even suggest something like this, I was lucky.

Edit...

I'm talking about curing the excema, not just continuing to treat it, and I'm suggesting that if it is an allergic reaction it may also cause the persistence of the diaper rash. How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
It could be a yeast infection they look like diaper rash on boys or girls and they are quite common you should take the baby to the doctor they can prescribe you some Nystatin ointment that should clear it up pretty fast. How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
Take him to the doctor. No need for the hospital.

It sounds like it could be a yeast infection. You have to get it diagnosed by a doctor to be sure.

Have you tried any of the over the counter yeast treatments? How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
It is probably a yeast rash and will need to be treated with an anti fungal cream. How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
If your child has eczema on his scalp then it is highly likely he has a problem elsewhere. If he were my child I would take him to a doctor soon as possible. If his regular doctor does not help quickly I 'd say an improvement within a week, I would see a dermatologist. It's a well quoted fact within the medical community that G.P. and other nonspecialists misdiagnose skin problems more than 85% of the time.

I f you want professional information consult medline. Here is one article below.

Remember that if a doctor thinks a case is neglect he will usually report it to DCS. Also If his penis is involved then get him to a doctor quickly as this is a semi-emergency. It can cause adhesions of the meatus (opening for urine) and needs professional attention. How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
I would go ahead and take him to the doctor. If he's had a diaper rash for that long and isn't responding to traditional diaper rash remedies then he either needs prescription diaper rash meds or perhaps he has a yeast infection that needs to be treated. Good luck Hun with the baby. How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
Maybe it is yeast and not diaper rash? Did the doc look at his rear end?How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
don't let him use diapers use towels instead until diaper rash is gone try a new brand. How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
My 5 yr old daughter just complained of a rash in that area ( she has been potty trained since 2 ) and she had it for several weeks. The skin on her bottom area was red and peeling and painful. I was not satisfied with the docs who said it was from not wiping right, and I had her tested for yeast and uti. It still didnt go away with every cream we tried.

I got irate and demanded more tests and she had rectal strep which boys and girls can get in that area. I didnt know but you can get strep there .

So if it doesnt go away ask for a simple test for this ... or perhaps he is allergic to his diaper. How long should a baby have a diaper rash before he needs to be taken to the hospital?
my five month old son also has eczema and had diaper rash for the first two months of his life. i tried every cream they make with no improvement. i finally figured out he is allergic to baby wipes. He can only use pampers sensitive wipes, try different types of wipes and see if that helps. He is not bothered by diapers we have used several diff brands with no problem. the eczema actually went away when I switched him from breastmilk to formula last month. not sure but i assume he was allergic to something i was eatting. He is going to the allergist tomorrow.
