In the baby book I bought, Baby 411, it said it's okay to put it on every time you change your baby. Also, a good tip is to let your baby's butt air dry for a few seconds before putting on another diaper. This does the same thing as putting on cream. Every time I see any bit of redness on his butt I put cream on and the next day it's gone. It's an okay habit to get into.

I've done the same thing. I still do and I recently switched to desitin the thing is that Desiting has more Zinc that many others, so maybe you wanna apply it every other diaper change.
It's true about cloth diapers I've used it for my kids, but now my daughter is in full time daycare so she's using disposables.. so she's got diaper rash a lot.

I worked in a nursing home before I started in a hospital and you know what, We used it every two hours when we turned our patients. Thats great that you are using it that often. If you are concerned, allow your baby to have no diaper on for a few minutes after each changing. The desitin absorbs into their skin. I don't think there's a problem with putting it on after every diaper change - I did that with my oldest son for quite some time. However, with my youngest, I have found just applying diaper cream when his bottom becomes a little red, and at night (since he may not have a diaper change at all) works just as well. I've never heard that it's bad to do. Personally I would put on Vaseline (they sell it in a tube, also) on if he doesn't have a rash. It will be a barrier. They also have the Desitin Clear that would do the same. The Vaseline just doesn't have any of the active ingredient.How often should I be using Diaper Cream?
I only use it when baby actually looks like they are getting a rash.
My 17 month old has had two rashes- the first at ten months while teething, and the second one at 15 months after she had an antibiotic for the first time.
When I had my first, I used it much more frequently ( daily) and my first also had more diaper rashes.
Many of those creams are made with zinc and petroleum- what goes on the skin, goes in the body- petroleum, especially, is not something you want to put on baby daily. I now use a chamomile based ointment when needed, and it works just as well.
